How to grow customer revenue beyond the first contract
On this page

The first contract is the start of the revenue, not the end of it. Customers mention another team, another office, or another job they want the product to do. Usage shows the same thing when a group hits a limit or a new group appears in the product. If that signal stays in a recording or a chart, the expansion waits until renewal, and then it is a surprise for both sides.

This guide covers four parts of that work. Each part describes the problem, and then describes how you handle it in Quivly.

Find additional needs in customer conversations and usage

An expansion often starts as a sentence on a call, or as usage that is pressing on what the customer bought. If the sentence stays in the recording, the team loses it. Your people find these needs one account at a time, when someone thinks to look before the renewal meeting.

In Quivly, calls and usage sit on the account record. You can ask Ask Quivly where a customer is describing another team, location, product, or use case, and where usage is pressing on the current contract. Quivly answers from the calls and the product data, and you can open the source. The health score also marks accounts that are growing. You leave the finding on the account, so the need is visible before the renewal meeting.

Qualify expansion into more teams, locations, products, or use cases

A hint is not yet an opportunity. You still need the specific team, location, product, or use case, and you need a person at the customer who can act on it. Teams skip that step and pass along a note that the customer might want more. The follow-up stalls because there is no owner and no next step.

You qualify the hint on the account. You name the team, the location, the product, or the use case. You check the usage and the contacts on the account record so you know who would use it and who would approve it. Ask Quivly can pull that picture from the calls, the CRM, and the usage. If you cannot name the user and the approver, you keep it as a note on the account. If you can, you have an opportunity you can plan.

Turn opportunities into owned expansion plans

A qualified opportunity stalls when it lives in a slide or a CRM field with no tasks. Sales and customer success each assume the other person is driving it. The customer waits, and the next real conversation is the renewal.

You open an expansion project on the account. The project holds the scope, the owner, the customer stakeholders, and the dates. The Actions Feed drafts the outreach to the stakeholder from the usage or the call that surfaced the need. Your team reviews the draft and sends it. The project is the plan you run, and the account shows the opportunity next to the current contract.

Get sold expansion implemented and actively used

Closing the expansion creates a new delivery obligation. The new team, location, or use case still has to be implemented, and then people have to use it. If that work is a side note on the original account, it slips. At the next renewal you are explaining a purchase the customer is not using.

You run the sold expansion as a project on the same account, with milestones, owners, and a first-value date for the new scope. This follows the same project motion as onboarding, aimed at the expansion you just sold. Usage on the account record shows whether the new team is active. When a milestone stalls, you assign the blocker. The expansion is in place when the project is complete and the new users are in the product.

What you end up with

Growth past the first contract is a sequence you can see on the account. You find the need in the calls and the usage. You qualify it into a specific team, location, product, or use case. You give it an owner and a plan. You implement it and watch the new usage. Quivly holds that sequence on the account, and your team reviews the outreach before the customer sees it.
